Tom McEwen wins third intermediate title – The Evelyn Partners British Intermediate Championship

Tom McEwen timed his cross-country round to perfection to win the Evelyn Partners British Intermediate Championship at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire.

He was first out on Captain Mark Phillips’s track and finished inside the optimum time of 5min 53 sec — the only rider to do so in the class — on Martin Belsham’s Luna Mist.

This is a third national intermediate title for the Olympic medallist, who won in 2018 on CHF Cooliser, who is currently entered for Burghley, and in 2019 on Dreamaway ll. Tom, who is based at Gatcombe, took on the ride on the nine-year-old mare Luna Mist this year from Italian competitor Paolo Tormonia.

Oliver Townend, who was first and second after dressage, had a show jump down apiece on Crazy du Loir and Caunton First Class and finished in second and third places.

Georgie Campbell was fourth on Global Quest, Jo Rimmer was fifth on Chilli’s Midnight Star and New Zealander Tim Price was sixth on Viscount Victor.

Young rider Henrietta Ewell led after the show jumping phase on Zaino, but retired after problems on the cross-country.
